This lesson is designed for 3 or 4 class periods. It allows students to take notes in animal classification including information on vertebrates and invertebrates. They will be involved in a classification activity with images and information and finally they will write an opinion paper. A grading rubric is included for the writing activity.

S5L1. I can classify organisms into groups and relate how they determined the groups with how and why scientists use classification.
S5L1a I can demonstrate how animals are sorted into groups (vertebrate and invertebrate) and how vertebrates are sorted into groups (fish, amphibian, reptile, bird, and mammal).
ELAGSE5W1: Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons.
