In this 10 to 15 minute imaginative and interactive warm-up activity, students will bring a new level to either the characters they are playing in a scene OR characters they are focusing on in a novel through this Animal Exercise.
This exercise is a new spin on the classic idea of having an “animal image” for a character you are playing. As actors, we like to think of an animal the characters we are portraying embodies in order to help with body language and overall character development. Through this warm-up activity, students will embody certain animals (not an imitation of the animal; rather, portraying a person who embodies that animal), notice how others are portraying certain animals, and begin to think about what kind of an animal the character they are focusing on could embody.
This game has multiple rounds and levels to it in order to adjust to different level of classes. In addition to this, it would be a wonderful game to add to an English class as students study various characters from literature and think about their different traits.
Students find this activity fun and engaging as they embody an animal and think about what their fellow classmates are embodying as well.
