Each of the quizzes in this file contains 10 multiple choice questions designed to check for literal comprehension. Each also ends with an essay prompt that goes up the critical thinking ladder and asks students to explain or analyze, using supporting evidence from the chapter. The first three quizzes cover chapters 1 - 6 in two-chapter combinations. Each of the remaining chapters (7 - 10) has its own quiz.
The unit test contains 10 multiple choice questions, carefully designed to require critical thinking--to draw conclusions based on the entire text. The essay section of the test contains 7 prompts, also designed to require higher level thinking and writing through analysis, application, synthesis, and evaluation. Students are asked to choose two of the seven options, but you could easily modify that requirement, depending on how much time is available for your students to write--and how much time you have to score them.
