This Animal Farm contract project is an extensive project that I do with my students in my ninth grade English/Language Arts classroom as we do a novel study on the George Orwell classic.
This project provides students with over twenty activities to choose from that range from essays, Prezis, PowerPoints, musical selections, skits, illustrations, puppets, collages, newspaper articles, baking/recipes, and more. It allows students to select the grade that they would hope to receive (according to the point values stated) along with the flexibility to do what they are good at in order to reach that grade.
All types of learning styles are considered, and I even provide them with the option to come up with their own ideas to use in place of some of those I present to them as suggestions. This is a perfect activity where a student's grade rests entirely in his own hands.
All of the work turned in (especially the crafty items) are completed with the understanding that the student may receive UP TO the allotted points. Quality work receives the full amount, while incomplete work or half-hearted attempts only receive what the teacher deems appropriate.
I use an Excel spreadsheet to keep the points organized until I am ready to add their scores up.
