Like any good allegory, Animal Farm contains many levels of meaning. One does not need to have background knowledge in Russian history in order to gain insights from Animal Farm. Aspects of Orwell’s message about human nature, political systems, and social class still resonate today!
In this final performance task, students are asked to explore the characters of Animal Farm in depth and make comparisons to characters found in other books, movies, or television. Students can also make comparisons to people in their own lives (e.g. siblings and parents), famous people (e.g. celebrities or politicians), or people from history.
Included in this package is:
* Final performance task handout, along with an exemplar paragraph.and two organizational tools
* Final performance task PowerPoint
* Parts of a five paragraph essay PowerPoint
I've ran this lesson with grade nines, and got a lot of quality work from students of all abilities. Student choice allows for differentiation. My students made comparisons to their own family, their own classmates, United States politics (comparing the book to the Donald Trump administration/2016 election), North Korea, the Syrian Civil War, Star Wars, the Lion King, Riverdale, the Russian Revolution, and more.
