This biographical unit about the author of Animal Farm and 1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four) George Orwell, is designed as a multi-purpose reading and writing assignment for middle and high school English (or History students studying the Cold War period) students.
(1) a pre-reading vocabulary activity,
(2) four reading passages with questions (comprehension and language), and
(3) a page of short essay answer questions.
Students do not have to have read Orwell’s novels to complete the activities in this product and of course its components can be used over more or less than five days, as it suits the teacher and the needs of the class.
The passages are:
-- “Young George Orwell (aka Eric Arthur Blair)".
-- “The Writer Emerges”,
-- “Orwell’s Working Years” and
-- “Orwell’s Legacy”.
Each text is between 400 and 500 words in length. I have also included the four biographical passages as one continuous reading text if the teacher prefers to use the material this way.
The comprehension and language questions with the reading passages can be used in class as bellringer/warm-up activities.
A full answer key is included.
