I created my own unit for Animal Farm by George Orwell. I have my own version of a double entry journal that includes "reading response" prompts for the students when they are stuck. It also asks them to think about what they are noting, such as characterization, descriptive language, setting, etc. I then have a focus for each chapter and a journal/connection question that goes along with it. These daily "chapter activities" get the students to write in more detail regarding a specific literary element.
