This is a comprehensive unit that you can take pieces of or utilize everything. I usually begin with propaganda techniques and notes and the cereal box or poster activity. Then I lead into Animal Farm and the analysis of characters, speeches, and vocabulary. I end with students either writing their own speech using rhetoric or analyzing speeches and songs along with Animal Farm to prove rhetoric was used.
I have included PowerPoints with numerous propaganda techniques and examples as well as warm-ups and/or exit slips.
There is on project activity with scoring rubric and numerous graphic organizers. Handouts and a character analysis book are also included to prepare students for analysis writing and identification of rhetoric in speeches and song lyrics.
Use each activity or pick and choose, but your students will understand propaganda and rhetorical devices by the end of Animal Farm by George Orwell.
