This is an in-depth preparation sheet to use with novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. The packet has major essential questions for the students, asking them to analyze the text and apply it to the world around them.
When I use this in my classroom, I use the questions listed in the packet throughout the course of the novel as journal prompts. Then, I give them this prep packet after the novel is complete to prepare for a Socratic seminar. Students spend a class period collecting information from the novel and other texts to support their answers to the essential questions. They also spend time coming up with questions of their own to ask to their peers during the seminar.
In my experience, this prep packet has deepened the level of discussion about the concepts in Animal Farm. It requires students to come with thorough, text based answers prepared, leading to strong and intelligent conversations.
The packet can also be tweaked to be used with any text, simply by changing the questions.
