Close reading can be a difficult task and should be done *with* your students as a read aloud in a guided manner. You can choose to do it together as a whole class, or pull several students aside. These articles are typically too advanced for younger students to read fluently and is not intended to be used for that purpose. Instead, it is intended to be used to introduce students to the skills necessary to gain information from a text, and use the text to support their claims.
This article is common core aligned, specifically tackling the following anchor standards:
*CCRA.R.1: Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it: cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text.
*CCRA.L.4- Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning words and phrases using context clues...
*CCRA.L.6: ...Demonstrate independence in gathering vocabulary knowledge when encountering an unknown term important to comprehension and expression.
