Engage and Excite young learners with this hands on UNIT of WORK
This Animal Habitats unit of work looks at the different animals in three habitats. Forest/Jungle, Ocean and Desert. Students will be led through researching the habitats and using craft to create an animal from each habitat before working in collaborative groups to build a model habitat and animal puppets. Students will demonstrate their learning through a play at the end of the unit. This is a very hands on unit and in each lesson involves producing something.

Engage/Introduction This is the teachers chance to get the students excited for the lesson. Lots of fun ideas and quick and exciting activities.
Explore This is the main teaching and exploring part of the lesson. Where students participate in activities and test their designs.
Learning Reflection This is the students chance to present or explain what happened, what they observed and what they learnt. This is an important part of verbalizing and consolidating learning.
Lesson 1 - Introduction to Habitats
Students are introduced to the animal habitat game. Students discuss and draw their favorite animal. They draw the habitat of their animal
Lesson 2 Forest/Jungle
Read a book or show a clip about the forest or jungle. Locate the amazon rain forest on a map or globe. Students draw a forest or jungle background and create paper plate parrots
Lesson 3 - The Desert
Read a book or show a clip about the desert. Locate the Sahara desert and any more local deserts on a map. Students draw a desert background and create a paper plate snake
Lesson 4 - The Ocean
Read a book or show a clip about the ocean. Locate your closest ocean on a map. Students draw an ocean background and create a paper plate jelly fish
Lesson 5 - Animal Puppets
Students will be given one of the studied habitats and asked to create an animal puppet to match their habitat
Lesson 6 - Habitat Creation
Using cardboard and craft materials students will create the habitat to match their animal puppets
Lesson 7 - Puppet Play Presentations
Using the animal puppets and background, students practice and perform a play about their animals and habitat
