Description

In these NGSS 2-LS4-1 science activities for Animal Habitats students learn how plants and animals make their homes in a variety of habitats across the globe. Included are science activities, worksheets, reading passages, and more.

Students learn about the diversity of life on Earth and how specific plants and animals live within their habitat. It includes 8 different science stations where students deepen their understanding of a variety of habitats. This meets the Second Grade Next Generation Standards (NGSS 2-LS4-1).

Habitats Included in this Science Station BUNDLE

  • Arctic
  • Temperate Forest
  • Intertidal Zone (Ocean Habitat)
  • Pond
  • Desert
  • Land Habitats vs. Water Habitats for Plants and Animals

Habitats Stations Include

Big Idea Posters that explain the core ideas of the stations (BUNDLE ONLY)

Vocabulary Cards in two formats with and without pictures (BUNDLE ONLY)

Watch a Video - Students watch a video in order to learn about ANIMAL HOMES or KELP FORESTS.  They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Play a Game - Students play a video game, a board game, a crossword puzzle, or word search and learn about habitats. Students answer questions to reinforce new learning.

Investigate the Arctic Habitat - Students read about the ARCTIC habitat. They look at pictures of Arctic plants and animals in order to investigate this habitat.

They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Diagram the Temperate Forest Habitat - Students read about the TEMPERATE FOREST habitat. They create a diagram of the habitat and answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Read About the Intertidal Habitat - Students read about the habitats of the INTERTIDAL ZONE. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Model a Pond Habitat - Students read about a pond habitat and construct a model of a POND food web. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Explore the Desert Habitat - Students read about the DESERT habitat and explore what they’ve learned with an activity. They answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

Sort Land and Water Habitats - Students read about LAND HABITATS and WATER HABITATS. They sort organisms into the two categories of habitats. They then answer questions in order to reinforce what they have learned.

MP3 AUDIO

Now includes all MP3 audio of all text passages. You can access the MP3 via a website or install them on your devices to have students listen to the texts read aloud to them.

Google Classroom™️ Components Include:

  • Google Forms™️ with Reading Passages, Differentiated Questions and Links to the Videos and Games (all stations)
  • Google Slides™️ with Activity Directions & Worksheets to record results (Investigate, Diagram, Model, Explore, and Sort)

While we have included Google Slides, many of the stations are hands-on.

Differentiated Responses

Each station includes four different ways to respond to the experience at the station: short answer questions, fill-in-the-blank questions, task cards with short answers, task cards with multiple choice. All the variations are similar to one another. Choose the format that best fits your classroom and students. Students are encouraged to use their science journals, but worksheets are included as well.

Each station is designed to last about 15-20 minutes. Students may do one a day for 8 days, 2 a day for four days, or any format that works for your classroom. Because there are additional activities for the Watch and Play stations, you can offer those as a choice within that station or offer them as an early finisher station, as well.

NGSS Standards

In Second Grade, students are expected to demonstrate understanding in the following area:

  • 2-LS4-1. Make observations of plants and animals to compare the diversity of life in different habitats.

This correlates with the DCI 2-LS4.D, which states:

  • There are many different kinds of living things in any area, and they exist in different places on land and in water. (2-LS4-1)

The Investigate, Diagram, and Explore stations correlate with the Engineering Design DCI ETS1.A, which states:

  • Asking questions, making observations, and gathering information are helpful in thinking about problems. (K-2-ETS1-1)

The Investigate, Diagram, Model, and Explore stations meet the Science and Engineering Practices:

  • Planning and Carrying Out Investigations: Make observations (firsthand or from media) to collect data that can be used to make comparisons. (2-LS4-1)

All stations in this set meet the DCI 2-LS4.D and incorporate ETS1.A, asking questions, making observations, and gathering information. See below for details on how these stations meet the standards and specific DCIs.

Additional Second Grade Science Units

Purchase ALL of the Second Grade Science Stations in one large BUNDLE

NGSS:  2-PS1.A  Structure and Properties of Matter - includes MP3 Audio of text passages

Incorporating:  ETS1.A  Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems

This unit is about the structure of matter (what matter is made of) and properties of matter (how matter can be described.)

NGSS 2-PS1.B Reversible & Irreversible Changes - includes MP3 Audio of text passages

Incorporating: ETS1.B Developing Possible Solutions

This unit is about what happens when matter is heated and cooled, or the changes in the state of matter.  Students also learn that when matter changes state, the changes can be reversible or irreversible

NGSS 2-LS2.A Green & Growing - includes MP3 Audio of text passages

Incorporating: ETS1.B Developing Possible Solutions

This unit is about the biology and ecology of plants.  Students will learn about what plants need to grow, how they reproduce, and the role of pollinators in their life cycle.

NGSS 2-LS4.D Biodiversity and Humans - Habitats - includes MP3 Audio of text passages

Incorporating: ETS1.A Defining and Delimiting Engineering Problems

This unit is about the different habitats on Earth.  Students will learn about the biology, ecology, and climate zones of Earth's habitats.  They will learn how structures on different species suit them for their environment.
