Enjoy this simple cross-curricular life cycle activity in your classroom. Mix science and art with directed drawings designed to teach students about the animal life cycle. Using directed drawings to teach the animal life cycle is a fun way to create beautiful illustrations while developing an understanding of the animal stages.

Students develop their drawing skills and learn about science. Each of the life cycle pictures include a simple visual and written instructions that students can complete independently. These directed drawings can also be used as a whole class activity

In addition, use the life cycle activity mini version to make life cycle sequence cards or a diorama.

We learn through careful observation. Through careful instructions students learn how to draw various life cycles. Students benefit from spending careful time observing the life cycle of animals. Finished drawings can be used to make a life cycle project such as a booklet, a poster, a diorama, or an art piece. 

Building Drawing Confidence

Directed drawings are a great way to build art confidence in young students and to establish a daily drawing routine.


This product BUNDLE contains 5 Animal Life Cycle Directed Drawings to print & enjoy with your students!

  • Clear visual drawing instructions to complete each drawing. 

  • Written instructions are added below each visual step. This helps add guidance and can be read out by the teacher if walking students through each step as a whole class activity.

  • The starting step is provided on a separate page. These can be printed out and given to the students before beginning each directed drawing. Having the starting step helps students feel successful. 

  • Tips on ways to use it in the classroom are included at the start of the document if you are looking for new ways to incorporate drawings into your classroom.

  • A colored version of each picture is provided at the end of the drawing steps. Having a hand colored image simplifies how to blend colors to make the image more realistic. It is sometimes challenging to see multiple colors in a photograph but easier in a drawing. 

  • A smaller version of the drawings is provided. This is helpful to use if building a diorama. A completed version is also provided that can be used for sequencing cards.



  • Print the initial step, so help students start out with the right perspective. It also helps them have success in making their drawing large enough.

  • Use positive self-talk when modeling drawing steps to students. That way they can see that making mistakes and trying again is a part of learning a new skill.

  • Prep all the drawing pages in one go. This will reduce your prep time.

  • Reuse directions. If you are planning on using this product again next year, save the drawing steps and have students hand them in right after they are finished with them.

  • Look at photos. Looking at photos of the object is a great way to talk about the colors in the object and how to blend them together. Look at where the image is lighter and darker.
