Research shows that ESL students learn and retain vocabulary better if the activity requires high level thinking. Creating something new is one of the highest of all cognitive tasks -- and it's fun!
As beginning language learners stretch their thinking to come up with ideas for the Animal Masks activity, they simultaneously expand their lexicon more effectively than if they were simply completing a worksheet. This hands-on project allows them to connect what they already know about different animals -- in their own language --with what these animals might think and talk about in English.
The Animal Masks activity is an ideal follow-up to the traditional study of animal vocabulary words found in a picture dictionary or on picture flashcards.
Additionally, Animal Masks is one of 26 A to Z activities designed to complement the various vocabulary units found in the Picture This! Beginning ESL Teacher's Vocabulary Resource Bundles.
