ANIMAL PORTFOLIO STUDY
This is a collection, or portfolio, of independent activities meant to replace the usual animal research report. It can be used by ALL LEVELS of students because of the variety of types of activities students may choose. Subtract items if the number of choices is too overwhelming for your group. It lends itself to DIFFERENTIATION very easily and is Something Different to Try.
You determine the point values for each activity. Ones with less DEPTH AND COMPLEXITY earn fewer points. If you want to make some of them mandatory, simply star those. If time is short, just raise the point values so students earn 100 points faster. Students who earn more than 100 points receive extra credit.
I’ve included the INDEPENDENT STUDY CONTRACT and a sample DATA COLLECTION SHEET complete with a primary version of BIBLIOGRAPHIC INFORMATION collection. These forms were originally used with my GT 1st graders but could be used with any level by brainstorming what questions students have about the animal and categorizing the questions into 4-6 groups that become questions to research. In order to get a large variety of animals instead of the usual ones, we started our project by creating an alphabet fluency list together that incorporated animal names from our brains as well as resource books. See if you can beat our 240.
There are 2 FORMATS- one with an imbedded illustration. If that does not copy well for you, try the 2nd footprint version.
