PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

My students absolutely love these! I teach them the different decoding/word-solving strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word by using these reading buddies. As I teach a certain skill, for example, using the picture to get clues, I introduce a character such as Peeking Parrot. I cut off a tiny bit of each edge of these 8.5 x 11inch posters and mat them onto bright cardstock sheets. As I introduce a new character, it is added to our Reading Buddy Wall. I also have a shelf of Beanie Boo/Yoo Hoo stuffed animals to correspond with each character. If a student is working on a certain strategy, I allow them to have that Reading Buddy stuffed animal sit with them (For example, if they are working on paying attention to word endings while reading, Ending Elly could sit with them to serve as a reminder). It makes learning word-solving strategies so much more fun! Since I began using these buddies, my students have shown a dramatic increase in their ability to articulate, remember, and USE many different strategies to figure out unfamiliar words.
This download includes 9 different strategy posters that are each 8.5x11inches. There is also a bonus strategy poster, as I have included two options for the "say the first sound of the word" strategy.
The characters and strategies are:
Peeking Parrot (use the picture for clues)
Stretch the Giraffe (use your finger to s-t-r-e-t-ch out the word, then put the sounds together)
Skippy Bunny (skip the word, read to the end of the sentence, and return)
Flippy Frog (flip the vowel sound)
Careful Chameleon (check the picture AND words, does it look right? sound right? make sense?)
Endings Elly (pay attention to the END of the word)
Tryin' Lion (try a word that makes sense, start from the beginning of the sentence and try the sentence again)
Chunky Monkey (use your finger to cover parts of the word and sound it out in chunks - look for chunks you know)
Speaking Spike (say the first sounds of the word out loud)
OR
Speaking Spot (say the first sounds of the word out loud)

I hope these are helpful!
