I have found that the hands-on sorting practice has really helped my students better understand the concepts listed above. Since I first started using this product in my classroom, my unit test scores have gone up. I typically teach each concept (grouped into numbers above) and then review with an independent sort before moving on to the next concept. There have been a couple times I thought my students really understood and then they were unable to correctly sort the pictures and I realized I needed to reteach.
These sorts are quick, easy, and make a great addition to our science interactive notebooks. My third graders love notebooking and view it as a scrapbook of their learning. I have developed a couple ways to scaffold this product over the years including giving only a couple pictures at a time to struggling students and having early finishers turn their sort into sentences or paragraphs.
