THE ANIMAL EXPERT PROJECT

Animal Research provides so many steps for students to learn the research process, and all in an AUTHENTIC, FUN WAY. The students LOVED this reading/writing/mini-research project. Animal Research would make a perfect way to set up norms with independent work time, writing workshop, accessing informational text, plagiarism, small group collaboration, and presentation skills.

This is a Common Core-based research project that was successfully taught. The month-long unit integrates most informational reading and writing standards for 1st-3rd grade along with many of the standards for speaking and listening.

Although the students’ written project was amazing, my bigger goal with this unit was to create an engaging, authentic setting for students to think analytically about a topic of their own choosing. The students were immersed in informational reading and writing.

The teacher who graciously allowed me to borrow her class said by far it was the best learning experience of the year. Hands down! One of the most favorite lessons was on the bibliography! (You'll never guess what we did)

I added a “Grit” and goal-setting thread throughout the unit to help students self-monitor their efforts and to help them focus and maintain a sense of purpose and achievement.

Take a look at the free download for a bit more information. I think you will be excited to begin.
