This packet was created for students in intermediate grades. It contains everything they will need to take notes, cite sources, organize information, create a works cited, and write an effective multi-paragraph informative piece. The product file includes two formats: a pdf and an editable version (so you can tailor it to your specific needs). In addition, a 20-slide PowerPoint presentation provides modeling for seven steps to improve student writing.
Instead of traditional note cards, the Animal Research Packet offers note sheets. These work well for intermediate students who are just beginning the formal research process. Titles on the sheets and cards guide students to find and organize thorough information. A blank sheet is also provided.
*For a short, simple research project (or for less able learners) use only three note sheets: appearance, habits, and habitat.
*For a basic animal research project (or for average learners), use all note sheets except biome and adaptations.
*For an in-depth research project that focuses on animal adaptations (or for highly able learners), use all note sheets.
*To extend the adaptations experience, students may form groups of three and select an animal group (e.g., bears or birds). Each student then selects an animal from a different climate – tropical, temperate, or arctic. After conducting independent research, they share information on the grid provided. If desired, they may use the grid to write compare and contrast essays.
Boxes and Bullets
Boxes and bullets provide an appropriate template for students to group related information then write an appropriate topic sentence.
