This packet includes 40 different animal covers, research pages with boxes for students to write about the animal's habitat, description, eating habits, behavior, life expectancy, range, enemies, means of protection, means of communication, and a map to show the animal's distribution or range. It also includes pages for students to write a report about their findings. These pages include an organizer web, a rough draft, and a final page to write out the report. I have included a photograph showing student samples. The students use Ranger Rick's Zoobooks and the Internet for their research. If they wish, they may also check a book out of the library. We usually work on these projects in April and May, after state testing. This is a fun way for the students to apply their reading skills. So much time is spent on teaching students how to read that I love this opportunity to teach children how to apply their reading skills, such as finding the main idea, reading for details, and writing summaries.
