This product addresses Next Generation Science Standard 4-LS1-2 - From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes: Use a model to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the information in different ways.

There are two posters and a research and sorting activity.

There are cards for 48 animals that have specialized senses. There are 48 matching cards that tell what some of their senses and traits are. Each animal picture/name card is numbered 1 through 48. Specialized sense/trait cards are lettered A through Z and AA through VV. These need to be cut apart. Mix up the sense cards. For best use, print on card stock and laminate.

Students work independently, with a partner, or in a small group (as instructed by you, the teacher).

There is a “recording sheet” for students to write in their matching pairs. You may choose to use this as an assessment, if you wish.

Students need access to an Internet-connected computer. If you have limited access to multiple computers (such as a computer lab), you might try setting this up as a Science Station with one Internet-Connected computer! Students would then rotate through the station.

Finally, there is a “The Whys of It All” assignment for which students select any 3 of the animals researched and matched to their special senses. For this activity, students explain WHY that particular animal needs this specialized sense.

Feel free to limit the number of animals students are to research or divide them up so groups have different sets of cards. Your decision! To do all 48 will take time!
