This packet contains 42 colorful animal cards that may be used to help students learn animal names, math concepts and improve word finding skills, while playing a modified War Card game. All materials may be developed by one SLP for personal use and may be printed as often as needed for your student’s preschool teachers, teachers and parents to ensure carryover in the child’s natural environment.
Make 1 -2 sets of cards, laminate, and cut out cards. Deal all of the cards so each player has an equal number of cards. Each player turns over a card and says the name of their animal. Whoever has the highest number (i.e., numbers 1 – 3 in the upper left corner of the card) keeps the cards. If players have the same high number turn over another card. After all cards are played, each player counts their cards. Whoever has the largest number of cards wins the game. This activity teaches animal names as well as math concepts such as more, less, highest and lowest.
These cards may also be used to play Memory and Go Fish.
Once the child becomes comfortable with naming the items correctly, have them name of the animals quickly to improve word finding skills.
