This research note catcher was used as a first step in a Species Research composition. I most recently used this note-catcher as a lesson extension after watching a nature documentary about ocean life. To improve levels of engagement while watching a nature film in class, let the students know that they need to "Species Shop" for their research subject. This follow-up activity should be done on the computer. A short list of helpful websites is compiled and listed in the top right hand corner of the note-catcher for easy student access. This activity can be completed in one class period or could be stretched across multiple meeting times depending upon the lesson focus. This activity addresses a multiple of the recent Common Core standards including those pertaining to Listening for information from a multimedia source, identifying main idea and relevant supporting details, and writing for informational purposes. This activity could also be used as an alternative assessment tool in classrooms incorporating specially designed instruction, tiered instruction, and/or differentiated instruction. Designing materials for such classrooms and encouraging teachers to shy away from those filing cabinets filled with boring handouts is my mission as the Ditto Destroyer!!!
