Teach your students how to take notes while learning about a new animal! Model stopping and drawing a picture of facts you've learned during your nonfiction read alouds. Home, food, and baby-shaped bubbles direct students' thinking to search for facts related directly to the animal's home or habitat, diet, and life cycle or reproduction.
Frogs (bubble pictures from right to left)
-insects (flies, crickets, etc.)
-eggs and/or tadpoles
-frog shedding skin
-frog hiding from predator
If students are able, they can write words to go along with the pictures.
Eventually, my students did these on their own when learning from an animal website. They then used them to write animal books!
