Close reading strategies applied to a short film. Teaching with short films is a great way to engage struggling readers and English language learners, giving them a scaffold that enables them to actively participate in discussions with peers about literary terms. Each film/ lesson comes with: plot maps, essential questions, writing, and discussion prompts and suggestions for extending the lesson. This lesson using "Lifted" focuses on plot, theme, and characterization. It's a great film on the topic of a growth mindset and includes a poster task and writing task related growth vs. fixed mindset. This film is also great as a mentor text for writing and includes two writing tasks, in addition to a problem and solution text structure task. These four (ish) minute films and lessons work well as a hook that gives students something to connect to during a more in-depth lesson on a literary device within a complex text. The videos are not included.
In short, there is enough material here for a week’s worth of lessons, or you can pick and choose the learning that you want to focus on for a single day’s lesson.
