Anna of Byzantium is an historical novel about the life of Anna Comnena during the time of the Byzantium Empire. The novel places Anna Comnena in the convent where she was exiled by her brother(John) and Byzantine emperor John II Comnenus after her failed attempt to poison him with stolen cough syrup. The book vividly describes the setting of the story and all the characters in it. The Byzantium Era was from 330 1453 AD and was referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire,the continuation of the Roman Empire in the East during Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. This novel could be taught when teaching the fall of the Roman Empire.
My study guide contains comprehension questions and vocabulary for each chapter. It addresses the following skills: finding the main ideas, remembering details, retelling, summarizing, sequencing, comparing and contrasting, drawing conclusions, and making inferences. There are many opportunities for the students to writie diary entries and passages from other characters' points of view.
