5 Days with Anne Frank is a informational reading and writing assignment unit for middle school students. It can be equally utilized in an ELA class or a Social Studies class. It is best used before students read The Diary of Anne Frank OR used as simply a biographical study of Anne Frank, even if the students are not reading the book.
The passages are: “Anne Frank: An Introduction”, “Germany in the 1930’s”, “The War Begins”, and “Anne’s Diary”. Each of the four passages can be used alone - they could be assigned as the teacher wishes: in class over 1-4 days, as homework assignments, an independent work, etc. Each of the biographical passages has questions (comprehension and opinion-generating) on the right side of the page - they can therefore be used in class as bellringer activities. Each one also has a “Language Use” activity or a short writing assignment.
The unit also includes a quiz in two sections - it could be given at one time or split into two sessions. A vocabulary activity is included - students find 3 words in each of the passages that complete the cloze. The words are in order from the passages. Rounding off the product is a creative writing assignment asking students to write diary entries imagining themselves as 1) someone going into hiding and 2) one of the people who took the risk to hide the Frank family.
