In 8th grade, our students read the play of Anne Frank's diary. Many of the students have heard of the Holocaust, but they have limited and sometimes incorrect information about the event.
This part of my unit plan is a Power Point presentation after the KWL portion and some source readings about the time period. The slides detail the Holocaust in terms of the following categories: How It Started (antisemitism before WWII), Rise of Hitler, Concentration Camps, Resistance, various Roles, including Bystanders, targeted groups, Symbols, Secrecy, and the Aftermath. I have avoided pictures that might frighten kids, while keeping things as realistic as possible. The way the presentation is set up as well as the image choices were made during my stay in Washington, DC where I was able to take a course for teachers at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (the most invaluable Prof. Dev. I've ever done! – I highly recommend it).
