Annexation of Texas

The annexation of Texas was a hotly debated issue. It is one of the key turning points in both American and Texas history. What were the issues that were involved? Allow your students to explore the annexation of Texas in this activity. Students will start out the lesson with a 4 Corner Activity examining their initial feelings on the annexation of Texas. They will then be guided through the annexation decision with primary source political cartoons, historical readings and quotes from the time period. The activity concludes with a writing portion – should Texas be annexed to the United States?

This activity includes:

-a PDF and PowerPoint presentation guiding you through the lesson,

-embedded Interactive Student Notebook activities with a preview, graphic organizer and processing assignment

-a 5 page handout describing the issues from different points of view

7th Grade TEKS:
(4) History. The student understands how individuals, events, and issues shaped the history of the Republic of Texas and early Texas statehood. The student is expected to:
(A) identify individuals, events, and issues during the administrations of Republic of Texas Presidents Houston, Lamar, and Jones,
(B) analyze the causes of and events leading to Texas annexation; and
