Teachers often assume that their students know how to read, but the truth is, they don't. Rather, they do not know how to interact with the text in order to retain and analyze the text. The first lesson I teach every year and for every grade is annotating. I walk the students through the steps, the rationale, and by the end, they are annotating every text we read in class.
