As a reading specialist, I witness firsthand how students rush through texts without thinking, understanding or comprehending. Annotation is a solution to this problem as it forces students to stop and think about the text they are reading.
How? Model your thinking with a text using the annotating symbols.
Provide your students with this bookmark and encourage them to "mark up the text" with the symbols. After reading, have students share their annotations (their thinking) with a partner.
This technique is especially helpful with nonfiction texts.
