Close reading is more than just the process of reading a text closely. Central to the Common Core ELA standards, close reading is a thoughtful, purposeful analysis in which the student reads and annotates a short, complex text, focusing on certain details or patterns to gain a deeper, more precise understanding of its meaning and craft.
However, not every text should be annotated, and not every “close reading unit” actually lives up to the label. Thus, included in this packet is an easy 4-step close reading process I use with my own students along with an annotation poster (in color and black-and-white) that can be enlarged and hung in your classroom. The goal is to provide your students with a simple, repeatable process they can practice each time they do a close reading text analysis.
