Often times students don't know what to underline or look for when a teacher tells them to annotate or closely read a text. In the past my students would simply underline or highlight every line which doesn't teach them anything.
I have created a basic annotation/close reading guide that I give my students at the beginning of each school year and tell them to use it anytime I ask them to annotate a text.
There are numerous bullet points of what the students should be looking for and making note of instead of aimlessly underlining any sentence they see.
I hope this helps focus and narrow down close reading in your classroom!
