Students play a game (2 levels included) to collect all the parts of an ant while learning to define picnic and spring vocabulary.

The Ant Definition Building Game comes with 32 picnic/spring vocabulary words:

16 Level 1 (KG - 1st Grade) Vocabulary
16 Level 2 (2nd - 3rd Grade) Vocabulary


Students also have an opportunity to think of additional spring or picnic items and write their own definitions on blank ants.


SLP Tip:

Use a tool such as EET (Expanding Expressions Tool) to aid in memory and recall of category, function, and characteristics included in each definition.

Each definition is color coded according to the following color scheme:
Green = group
Blue = function
Eyeball = senses description

Black and white PDFs included.


Common Core:

Language 1.5.a. Sort words into categories (e.g., colors, clothing) to gain a sense of the concepts the categories represent.

Reading: Informational Text 2.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 2 topic or subject area.

Language 2.6 Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts, including using adjectives and adverbs to describe (e.g., When other kids are happy that makes me happy).

Reading: Informational Text 3.4 Determine the meaning of general academic and domain-specific words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 3 topic or subject area.

Language 3.6 Acquire and use accurately grade-appropriate conversational, general academic, and domain-specific words and phrases, including those that signal spatial and temporal relationships (e.g., After dinner that night we went looking for them).

Language 3.5.b. Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., describe people who are friendly or helpful).
