Description

The forgotten presidents can be hard to teach! Have students make campaign commercials for presidents from the antebellum and present commercials to classmates to make these men more memorable!

Students campaign for: Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, and Millard Fillmore

Each group is given SPECIFIC requirements for what they must include about the specific PRESIDENT they are campaigning for! EVERY group must address their candidate's position on slavery and expansion, as well as their war experience and political party.

CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW!

Students will be assigned a president, given content requirements, time to research, and allowed time to create an engaging campaign commercial to present to their classmates. Let students take notes on each other's commercials during the presentations. Slides are included for a teacher to review big ideas--including Whigs v. Democrats! Slides also have a short warm-up and discussion activity!

I used this activity in an American History class to get students engaged with the Forgotten/Shadow Presidents! I knew my students did not need to know detailed facts about each president, but they all needed to know about the role of expansion, changing political parties, and the expansion of slavery during the Antebellum. My students get creative with this group project every year!

Covers: Martin Van Buren, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, James K. Polk, Zachary Taylor, and Millard Fillmore; expansion; Mexican-American War; Texas annexation; Whigs; Democrats; presidents dying in office and Vice Presidential succession
