As indicated by the title, this product is meant to serve as a companion to Ayn Rand’s dystopian novella, Anthem. It assumes that the student has been introduced to Ayn Rand’s philosophy of Objectivism and has access to a dictionary. This is Part One of a two-part reading companion. Part One includes chapters 1 and 2. The items in this reading companion address the following, to varying degrees: applying background knowledge, predicting, analyzing character motives, citing textual evidence, and identifying vocabulary in context. Where relevant, page numbers are indicated; these page numbers align with the gratis copies provided by the Ayn Rand Institute (you can request copies at www.aynrand.org). In the event that the page numbers do not apply to your book, the items are in sequential order. Includes a complete answer key, with answers indicated in red. Though a Venn Diagram is provided for the final question in the answer key, the original question is purposely left blank so that they teacher/students may determine how to organize the information (T-Chart, Thinking Map, etc.).
This reading companion worked well with my 10th grade English students. It kept them focused and engaged with the text.
A two-minute introductory video on Objectivism (along with a host of other relevant resources) can be found at www.ayrand.org .
As always, I welcome any feedback that might help me to improve this product.
