After front loading my notes on setting, plot, theme, mood, and tone (you can find this in my TpT store), I have my students complete a mini-write on the story we are reading. Here is my two paragraph setting analysis of Ayn Rand's novella "Anthem."
Students are given explicit instructions to make sure all parts of the body paragraph -
the focus of much of my writing - are present. When they finish, whether they type or write the paragraphs, they must highlight and show that they have explained twice as much as the evidence they provided (this will be displayed in their highlights - more yellow than pink). This helps them to visually see their process and is easy for you as a teacher to see if they are on track or not.
