A counseling friend (Ed Smith) and I wrote this a couple of days after the Columbine tragedy. To be honest, Ed did most of the writing. It is a story to be read to a group of students which helps them to identify with every other student in the building, even the one that is least like them.
This story can be quite powerful. Depending on the size of the group, it can also lead to a tremendous discussion about how everyone in the school is responsible for looking out for others.
At IVC High School, we read this story to every incoming freshman class. I cannot say that it reaches the heart of every student who hears it, but I can confidently say that it reaches MANY.
After the story, there is a 3rd page included which has a brief written activity that I have done in the past with smaller groups that have heard this story.
I wanted to make this activity (story) free because it is one of the most powerful tools I use each year with the incoming freshmen. Feel free to alter or use the story as you see fit, other than for monetary gain.
