Anticipation Guides are a great way to activate your students’ prior knowledge before reading a book. The 6 statements in this guide were specifically chosen to lead students to think meaningfully about the ideas and themes set forth in the book Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan.
After reading the story, students should go back and rate the statements again as a debriefing exercise. The questions at the bottom of the activity sheet are great for whole class or small group discussions. Students should examine their answers in light of the reading. Were their opinions changed? What passages had the greatest impact on their change of opinion? These discussions are very beneficial in teaching students to personalize the reading and lead to meaningful reflection.
