This listing is for a scavenger hunt that requires students to research important background information before reading Sophocles' Antigone. Students enjoy this activity because it is more engaging than an author study lecture; it also gives them some practice with research, which aligns to Common Core standards. An answer key is included.
The assignment is broken into categories that include the following: About the Author, Greek Drama: A Brief History, Structure of Greek Theater, Greek Drama Terms, and Preliminary Notes for Understanding Antigone.
This scavenger hunt can be completed as homework (I give my students a week to complete outside of class) or as class work (can be completed in two 50 minute bells). Students are also asked to record basic citation information and are suggested to record a key on the back of the scavenger hunt to help them find their answers at a later date.
A fun review Jeopardy game corresponds to this listing. See Antigone Jeopardy PreReading Review for more details.
