Activities for two or three class periods. Before you read, while you read the story and after you have read "The Bet." Vocabulary, start-up questions (from the cases of Aaron Hernandez and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev) and study guide for Anton Checkhov's "The Bet," a classic story of a banker who sets up what he believes is a sure thing by promising to pay 2 million roubles to a lawyer to stay in solitary confinement for 15 years. The lawyer succeeds in more ways than one, although he does serve the entire 15 years voluntarily. The study guide leads students through the details that help bring the meaning of the story to the forefront. Includes a writing activity.
