Anton Chekov's "The Bet" is a challenging text- especially for reluctant/ struggling readers. What do almost all teenagers like? Instagram! Therefore, this lesson is designed to capture the interest of reluctant readers by allowing them to use Instagram for something productive (instead of posting selfies between classes).
Students start by reading a non-fiction reading on the death penalty and examining the death penalty argument. Then, students design/produce five Instagram pictures with captions that capture five key points from the story. Students are also required to paraphrase in modern language the letter that is left at the end of this story.
Not an Instagram wiz? No problem. Your students likely are. They will get doubly excited about this project if they think they are teaching their teacher something new.
