The purpose of this assessment is to show how students demonstrate an understanding of word relationships by using antonyms and synonyms. Assessment 1 tests student knowledge of synonyms using a variety of activities and resources. Students use an elementary thesaurus to look up synonyms. Assessment 2 tests student knowledge of antonyms. Students may complete the assessment one page at a time. The assessment is editable to allow the teacher to individualize for each student’s needs. It has been classroom tested on students at a 1.5 to 2.5 reading level, and for those students, they were given read aloud accommodations. All students passed advanced on the Virginia Alternate Assessment after direct instruction of the antonyms and synonyms was provided. This assessment is thorough and is great for the busy special educator or teacher who has not had a great deal of experience with the Virginia Alternate Assessment. Truly a timesaver!
