When doing anxiety prevention with children, it’s important to teach about the concept
of a “body alarm”. These are the feelings someone has when they sense danger. This is a good thing because it can get your prepared to take care of the danger. However, some people have over-responsive or overactive alarm systems, meaning they go off when there is no real danger. For a child, whenever they feel scared, they may think there is real danger. This is an introduction to “false alarms” and teaches children that an alarm may be real or may be false. Just like car alarms accidentally go off, so do body alarms. Just realizing this is true can be very powerful for children with anxiety. The next step is to learn what to do, and that is to question it… is it real or is it false? The answer is to look for the real danger and to check the facts.
