Here is a lesson you could do with your task on the topic of Anzac Day. Students brainstorm as a class about what it would be like to be away during the war, and construct a letter imagining they are writing home to a loved one.
This develops empathy in students as they have to put themselves in the shoes of someone else, and builds on their knowledge of the First World War. It's amazing what your students come up with!
I always show an example of a wartime letter (on the smartboard or passing it around the circle) to give students a sense of what I'm looking for.
I use this lesson idea in conjuction with other activities, based around WWI and Anzac Day. Please see my page for other ideas!
