Help your students review apostrophes for contractions and possession in this engaging trashketball game! All that you will need is the ability to project a power point presentation, a ball (soft texture), some dark tape, and a trash can. Although it’s optional, you may want to provide prizes for the winning team.
In this game, there are four rounds. In the first round, students write the contractions. In round two, they identify the correct form of the possessive or contraction. In rounds three and four, students add apostrophes where they are needed in the sentences. If desired, the game questions may be edited by the teacher.
Research shows that students often learn best when they can move, and this game motivates them with their love of sports. When you put your students in heterogeneous groups for a game with friendly competition, it is an excellent way to meet the needs of all of your students, especially your English Language Learners, and reward them for their success.
This activity makes excellent guided practice after instruction for apostrophes. Then follow the game with independent practice. Instructions for both students and the teacher are included, along with a key.
