Can you determine the number of seeds in each apple?
The sum of 2 apples is written between the apples. Use the sums to help you determine the number of seeds that are in each apple. But the trick is that the number of seeds in each apple must work in all directions.
You can cut out the seeds to use as a manipulative. The Puzzle A answer key shows how the manipulatives can help.
The puzzles get progressively harder.
These puzzles are great for CCSS MP1 (make sense of problems and preserve in solving them). The more students work on these they will create strategies, find patterns, and get great practice composing numbers in different ways.
These puzzles are great for teaching or practice guess, check, and improve strategies.
