Apple Happy is one of many characters from my “Happy” collection. I’ve created a character for every month because my kids love to see the new character!
Apple Happy is the first character that I introduce to my kindergarten kids. The Common Core Standards that I am addressing are: reading left to right, word correspondence, spaces between words, beginning sounds, and simple rhyming pairs. My intent is to get my kids to model “real reading!” Apple Happy also fits well with my thematic study of fall and apples!
The Apple Happy poem is simple enough that most kids can memorize it and feel successful when reading it independently. I have created a variety of activities using this poem: bulletin boards, graphing activities, and big books to name a few. Many of my students will make their own Apple Happy books in the writing area.
