For our current unit, I thought it would be fun to bring in apples for the class to sample and taste test. This was a great way to incorporate science into ELA. After the students taste the different apples, they record their observations on the chart, and chose their favorite type of apple. Next, they fill in the “Question” portion of the T-chart, based on their favorite apple. I have also included a differentiated sheet w/ the questions already written down. The students then research and discuss their findings in groups, to answer their questions. (One page of student friendly/nonfiction information per apple is provided, but more research online can be completed, if needed.) From here the students fill out the specific Journal Entry planning page to being to plan out their narrative. The final product is an informational journal entry narrative, using facts from the research and sensory details. There is a specific peer editing sheet included as well. The attached rubric is a standard based simple rubric that will not only guide the students, but also provide them with a grade. The included rubric assess the standards: R.I.4.1, R.I.4.3, R.I.4.10.
I am creating a bulletin board w/ pictures and the writing, but this can be sent home, saved, or hung up.
Enjoy and Have fun!
