This apple investigation is entitled, "Investigating Apples through a Scientific Lens". The four activity pages are used to record thinking, but are not the sole lesson; you will need to do mini-lessons with the whole group either before or after each experience (which I explain on the teacher instructional page).
I plan to use this to teach children about “what scientists do” (practices like observing, measuring, hypothesizing, experimenting, and reflecting). Students will hit CCSS for writing, speaking/listening, and measurement & data. The process will hit any state standards for science, as well.
Each mini-activity can take 20-60 minutes, depending how long you choose to discuss afterwards. After each activity, return to our easel paper brainstorm of what scientists look like, sound like, and act like, and students can add ideas they learned from that day. The four activities are:
#1 - Apple Observations
#2 - Apple Measuring
#3 - Apple Sink or Float?
#4 - Apple Chemistry Experiment
